This page contains the file association fixes for some of the common file types. These fixes are applicable for Windows® 7 systems only.

AVI ICO REG
BAT IMG SCR
BMP INF TIF/TIFF
CHM JPE/JPEG/JPG TXT
CMD JS VBS
COM LNK WMA
EXE MP3 WMV
GIF MPE/MPEG/MPG XML
HTM/HTML MSC ZIP

To fix the association for a particular file type:

1. Download the corresponding fix from the above table. (Use Right-click – Save as option in your browser to download the fixes.)

2. Unzip the file and extract the .REG file to Desktop.

3. Right-click the REG file and choose Merge. Alternately, you can open the Registry Editor and then using the Import option from the File menu, to merge the REG file contents.

Note that you need to be an administrator to apply these fixes.

For Windows Vista, visit the File association fixes for Windows Vista page.

Tweaks and Fixes for Windows® XP
If you need Windows® XP support for anything other than what is provided on my site, click HERE.  Clicking on a link will open a new window with the description of the file and its usage. Click on the DOWNLOAD link on the new page to download the file. Some of these files are in VB Script format, and some are in Visual Basic 6 EXE format. The VB6 Runtimes are installed with Windows XP, so no further software installation is necessary.  In the rare case that a control is required, that isn't shipped with XP, the program will have an installer.  Note: Some of these items are User specific settings. It may be necessary to run each VBS/EXE file while logged into to that User's desktop.  If your anti-virus software warns you of a "malicious" script, this is normal if you have "Script Safe" or similar technology enabled.  These scripts are not malicious, but they do make changes to the System Registry.

Windows XP Utilities

The utilities presented here are recommended only for Windows XP.  They may run under Windows 2000, but have not been verified to do so. Win NT IP Config is the exception, as its a Win2K applet.  All files here require the Visual Basic 6 runtime libraries, which are included in Windows XP. Where noted, these utilities will run with Service Pack 1 installed.
If you find these utilities useful in making Windows XP work the way you want it to, repairing your system or recovering from a disaster, please consider making a contribution to support my continuing efforts.

Windows® XP File Association Fixes
Copyright 2003 - Doug Knox

The files listed here are all ZIP files, which contain a REG (Registry) file. Download the ZIP and open it.  Extract the REG file to your hard disk and double click it.  Answer yes to the import prompt.  REG files can be viewed in Notepad.  Each of the REG files contains the default settings for the file extension indicated.  For the ZIP file fix, the download is a REG file, since ZIP's aren't working anyway!
NOTE:  If your EXE file associations are corrupted, it can be difficult to open REGEDIT, or to even import REG files.  To work around this, press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager.  Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run).  This will open a Command Prompt window.  Enter REGEDIT.EXE and press Enter.

Thanks to Nigel Andrews for this tip.
